Good news for those of us who find it impossible to resist all the holiday goodies we’re offered at this time of year: Breaking treats into smaller pieces helps outsmart extra calories, report researchers in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. In their study, people were told to eat as many candies as they wanted while they worked on a computer task, but one group received whole pieces while a second group received candies that had been cut in half. In the end, both groups ate the same number of pieces, but those eating the halved slices consumed 45 percent fewer calories—enough to shed 1/2 pound every week without dieting.
