About one in three Americans have prediabetes, which means they're blood-sugar levels are higher than normal. If left unchecked, many of them go on to develop type 2 diabetes, which puts them at risk for other complications like high blood pressure, heart disease, and even blindness.
Prediabetes has no symptoms, so 90 percent of the people who have it don't know it. But now, thanks to a video produced by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the American Medical Association (AMA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), that's about to change.
All you need to do to find out if you're at risk is answer seven simple questions--including your approximate age, your activity level, your body type--holding up a finger or two for every answer. If you're holding five fingers or more by the end of the minute, you're probably prediabetic--and need to get checked out by a doctor.
Luckily, reversing the condition is relatively simple: Tweak your routine so you're eating healthier foods and exercising--and yes, walking even 10 more minutes a day counts!
