Buying furniture is hard. Unlike clothes shopping, you do not have the option of trying on pieces in the fitting room to check if they suit you. Often it’s a gamble, and if it doesn’t pay off, you can be stuck with the wrong furniture for years.
But here comes IKEA to the rescue! The Swedish furniture giant has partnered with Apple to bring you IKEA Place. This app enables shoppers to point their Apple device at spaces to furnish in their home and see how various IKEA products would look.
“Many people are uncertain about changing their furnishings because they’re afraid of making the wrong decision,” explains Michael Valdsgaard, leader of digital transformation at Inter IKEA Group. “IKEA Place will give them the confidence that they’re making the right choice. It lets you explore various styles and colors, experiment with placement in the room, and visualize how it complements what you already have in your space."

IKEA is one of the first companies to harness Apple’s ARKit. This new technology was announced in June and makes Augmented Reality (AR) possible for anyone with an Apple device. It’s quite an amazing innovation; once you have styled your space you can save, share, and shop. The process is so easy, IKEA Place is being touted to revolutionize furniture shopping. At the very least, it could save you multiple (exhausting) trips to the store plus the hassle of returns.
The app will roll out with Apple’s iOS11 update in October. If you have an empty space to fill, we suggest holding off till you can have some fun with this new technology!
