If you've ever had to drive for a long distance on a highway before, chances are you've probably wondered how to avoid tolls. We've all been there: We have places to go, we have people to see, and maybe we don't happen to have an E-Z Pass or the extra change on us for the toll booth. Luckily for all of us, there is a way you can learn how to avoid tolls — and it involves Google Maps.
Google Maps has helped a great many of the directionally challenged among us get to our destination on time, especially if we might struggle a bit with reading traditional print maps. But a sneaky little feature on the app can also help you save a few extra coins on your journey, too. And the good news? Learning how to avoid tolls takes no time at all.
First, open up your trusty Google Maps app on your phone.
Second, enter in the place you want to travel to in the search bar up at the top. And click that little car symbol at the lower right hand corner.
Then, check out the default directions the app gave you.
Click start at the bottom and see if the directions give you a route that includes tolls, as this one does.
Swipe the directions down, back to the map screen, and click on the three little dots in a row on the upper right hand corner. Hit the "route options" button.
Toggle the "avoid tolls" option to the right. Then, swipe the left facing arrow in the top left corner.
Voila! You now have a route that is toll-free.
