This sounds like the cheater's guide to weight loss: Using up calories by lying down and relaxing instead of, say, sweating it out on a stationary bike. But a new study has found that you can burn about 126 calories soaking in the tub for an hour--and that's the calorie-equivalent of a 25- to 30-minute walk!
Researchers at Loughborough and Leicester Universities in Great Britain stumbled upon this surprising discovery when they were looking for other ways to lower blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes besides exercise. And sure enough, after strapping a glucose monitor to their subjects, the scientists found that an hour in the tub actually lowered blood sugar too--even more efficiently than an hour spent on a bike!
The one hitch. The water has to be HOT--104-degrees to be exact. That's the maximum temperature of a hot tub. So if hot tubs are your thing, you'll be doing your body--and your blood sugar-- good by enjoying a soak tonight!
