Kansas parents Brittani and Ian McIntire were shocked to find out they were expecting again. They didn't plan on having more kids after two daughters, but they were excited to find out they were having twins. Then, the happy news took a devastating turn.
While the female twin, named Madilyn, was developing normally, doctors were concerned when it looked like the male twin wasn't growing properly. As it turned out, the boy, named Mason, had a hole in his heart and an abnormal brain. So there is a chance Mason will not live to see his birth. But even if he is born alive, his only chance of survival would be heart surgery, which doctors would not be able to perform because of his abnormal brain.
But at a recent ultrasound appointment, the devastated parents saw something beautiful in the midst of imminent tragedy. The ultrasound image appeared to show Mason's hand wrapped around Madilyn's finger.
"Most twins, when she's trying to take pictures and stuff, they're kicking each other and hitting each other and she said with our twins it seems like she was very protective over him," Brittani said.
And this picture means the world to these devoted parents trying to cope with their impending loss.
"We know we have a piece of them together that will last forever and it's special to have," Ian said.
