Mom Jillian Benfield was having a tough day with her baby at Target. Any crying, exhausted 14-month-old can be a challenge, but since her little Anderson has Down syndrome, he has additional needs.
Benfield wrote in an online post that she was trying everything in the book that day to get her son to smile, from peek-a-boo to tickle monster. But nothing worked--until a kind stranger began talking to him in one of the aisles. He cheered up immediately and the tears vanished. The woman then looked at Benfield.
She said, "I have a special son, too."

The woman, whose name is Karen, began talking to Benfield about her journey with her now 23-year-old son, including therapy sessions and advocacy work.
Then Karen said, "I consider Down syndrome a gift."
Benfield began sobbing in joy. She said, "I agree."
As Anderson began to dance for Karen, Karen called him an angel. But he wasn't the only one.
"Angel can be translated to 'messenger,'" Benfield wrote in her post. "On a Tuesday in Target, I met one. She delivered a message I needed to hear. In the stress of am I doing enough for him, in the uncertainty that lies ahead, she told me that I’m on the right track. I’m on the right track because I’m loving him."
