It's tough to turn heartache into a celebration, but one California family did just that when their oldest daughter called them to say that the wedding was off, thanks to the would-be groom's jitters. Since Kari Duane and her husband had already paid $35,000 for their child's wedding and reception at one of Sacremento's fanciest hotels, they knew they couldn't get the money back. So they decided to host the reception anyway--and invite Sacremento's homeless families to share the meal.

As Kari told KCRA-3, the local TV station, "When I found out that the wedding would not be taking place, it just seemed like this would be something that we would do to give back." And although Quinn, her daughter, chose to stay home with friends on what would have been her wedding day, the parents were at the Citizen Hotel to help welcome the families they'd invited.

The guests were happy to have a memorable evening out with their kids. As one father told the TV station, “When you’re going through a hard time and a struggle for you to get out to do something different and with your family, it was really a blessing.”
Another woman said, "To lose out on something so important to yourself and then give it to someone else is really giving, really kind." And although the evening didn't erase the heartbreak for the Duane family, as Kari put it at the end of the reception, "I feel a lot of heartache for her, but I will take away something good from this, I will."
Afterward, Quinn took her mom to Belize, the place she'd picked for her honeymoon.
