The Cosmopolitan cocktail, often referred to as a "Cosmo," was one of the most popular cocktails of the late '90s and even the early 2000s. Don't believe us? Just watch one episode of Sex and the City — the Cosmo is sure to be featured in at least one scene. In fact, it seemed like these four feisty and glamorous city gals couldn't ever get enough of the sassy pink drink, and we can't say we blame them.
The origin of the Cosmo is still debated to this day, but some believe the drink was popularized by a New York bartender named Toby Cecchini in the late 1980s. To make his mark in the world of Cosmos and cocktails permanent, Cecchini published a book titled Cosmopolitan: A Bartender's Life ($20, Amazon). Even so, rumor has it that similar drinks were around as far back as 1903. One thing's for sure: However this trend started, there's no denying that Cosmos had a "moment" during Sex and the City's heyday — and that many people still love drinking them today.
