Over a 16-week period, people who alternated between cutting calories by a third for two weeks and eating as usual for two weeks lost 11 pounds more than those who dieted continuously. The scientists say when calories are cut, the body slows metabolism to ward off what it registers as a starvation risk. Interrupting a diet prevents this metabolic dip.
