Clever Mom ‘Retires’ Elf on the Shelf With Adorable Santa Note

Tags:

We’ve heard a lot of funny Elf on the Shelf stories out there, but we think this might be our favorite one yet. One mom, named Christy Heins, decided to give her elf an early “retirement” from his duties — and she shared the hilarious way she did so on Facebook.

As Heins explained in her post, she had done the popular Christmas tradition for three years straight with her three young daughters. Three times was enough for the busy mom — who was already occupied enough cleaning up after her three kids and her dog. But since her kids loved Elf on the Shelf so much, she had to be clever with how she went about letting the tradition go. Sure enough, she came up with a genius plan to put the game to rest gently: She left a letter for her kids from Santa Claus himself by their beloved doll.

After a jolly greeting from the man in red, the letter reads: “I think you will be pleased as peppermint to learn that George Elf had a very, very special Christmas wish this year. He has enjoyed you three girls so much over the years that his only wish for Christmas this year was to be a REAL toy in your house.”

Clever, right? The letter goes on to explain that “scout elves” — elves who fly back and forth to the North Pole each night to report to him — were not around back when their parents were little. He said some of these new scout elves loved their jobs, but their elf was different.

The letter continues, “He saw the excitement and happiness in your eyes each morning when you found him, and he wanted you to be able to touch him and play with him just like your other toys. He asked me if I could make this wish come true for him this Christmas, and I said YES! I love making Christmas wishes come true.”

Aww — hilarious and heartwarming! No better way to kick off any retirement, right? You can read her full letter in her original Facebook post below.

If you know a parent in a similar situation, we’re sure they’d be forever grateful if you sent her note to them!
