5 Kitchen Decorating Ideas That Will Elevate Your Home

Tags:

Planning on stepping up your kitchen styling game? These simple decorating ideas will give the heart of your home a whole new look. Whether it’s romantic dinners, weekend family gatherings, or even an evening of entertaining, the kitchen is consistently one of the hardest working spaces in the home. From bench top materials to your overall layout, there’s plenty to think about in the creation of a modern kitchen.

We’ve asked home goods retailer Temple & Webster’s head of styling, Jessica Bellef, to share her top decorating tips to help you add a pinch of personality and a dash of daring to help create your dream kitchen.

1. Add a layer of personality.

The kitchen acts as an extension to every other room in the home, so it’s important to make the space more personal and add our own individual flair. Open shelving offers storage space for kitchen essentials, but also creates a surface to display your favorite objects or interesting handmade pieces. Artwork and rugs will add another layer of texture to the space. If you’re adding a rug, choose an indoor/outdoor style of rug as it will be easier to maintain.

2. Experiment with terrazzo and statement marble.

Kitchen surfaces have overwhelmingly embraced the dramatic patterns of terrazzo and heavily veined stone, a look that gained popularity in 2018 and will continue into this year. We love the composite material of terrazzo for its ability to be color and pattern customized, and for the energy it brings to countertops, floors, and backsplashes. If a kitchen overhaul isn’t in your near future, you can still experiment with the terrazzo look by displaying storage canisters and vases made of the playful material. Marble will also be used generously as a dramatic focal point, with the use of high-contrasting veined patterns in white, black, green, and pink, on surfaces other than the countertop — think of the style statement made by a marble feature wall!

3. Reinvent with subway tiles.

The ubiquitous white subway tile isn’t falling out of favor anytime soon, but in 2019 we will have a rainbow of color (and finishes) to choose from. Subway tiles in brights hues (like joyful yellow or verdant green) and muted pastels (think soft pinks or sage) will trend in 2019. It’s a colorful spin on a classic look, and with a range of high gloss, matte, and metallic finishes available, the subway tile will be seen in whole new light this year.

4. Make a statement with black.

While retro pastels and softer shades are gaining popularity for kitchen schemes, a simultaneous turn to the dark side is continuing to trend. An all-black kitchen confidently exudes sleek sophistication and the 2019 take on the palette will see a mix-master approach to the selection of finishes. Matte and gloss surfaces will sit next to each other and create an interesting scheme with depth.

Another take on this trend is seen in high-contrast color schemes, with the addition of jet black hardware, bar stools, and pendant lights in an otherwise all-white space.

5. Try leather seating.

Whether it’s through the addition of tan bar stools or a banquet covered in a rich hide, leather gives a kitchen an added layer of texture that can only come from a natural material. Leather ages gracefully and adds visual warmth to a space, balancing out hard surfaces and tapping into our need to connect with nature. This push to connect more with nature underpins many of the home decorating trends for 2019.
