Doctor’s Mistake Forces Mother to Miss Her Son’s Birth

Tags:

At 38 weeks, mom-to-be Alice Payne was told by doctors that her baby had stopped growing. The decision was made to induce labor, and after an entire day passed without progress, doctors hoped a hormone injection would kick start the delivery.

Doctors gave Payne a hormone that causes labor contractions, but unfortunately, the machine to measure contractions wasn’t working. That meant that as Payne began to go into active labor, doctors had no idea how dilated she already was. They continued to increase the drug’s dosage until Payne asked for medication to help with the pain. The doctors obliged–but the pain meds made her so drowsy, she fell asleep!

Realizing that her body was ready to start pushing, medics were worried that Payne wouldn’t be conscious enough to help, but, amazingly, doctors didn’t have to deliver the baby via emergency C-section. While sleeping, Payne responded to her husband’s voice telling her to push. She did wake up for about 10 to 15 minutes during the delivery, but only once the baby was “properly on its way out.”

“I remember a nurse trying to put Philip in my arms, but I was going to sleep again, only to wake up two hours later to properly meet her son,” she told the Daily Mail.

When he was born, Philip weight 6 pounds and 4 ounces. Fortunately, both mother and son were healthy enough to be released two days later.

“Though I’m pleased I missed the pain of labour, I do wish I had been more present for my first baby’s birth,” she said. “Now when he’s older and asks me, I’ll have to tell him I nodded off.”

We’re so glad the whole family is healthy and doing well now!
