Before you light that Christmas Wreath or Apple Pumpkin Yankee Candle for the season, make sure you’re not just masking leftover food or pet smells. Starting with a sparkling and fresh-smelling home is the best way to welcome in the new season, and this easy kitchen trick can get you the latter in just a matter of minutes.
Reach for the Swiss army knife of kitchen tools: vinegar. In addition to scrubbing away stains and cleaning stubborn countertop messes, white vinegar can deodorize your home when simmered on the stove. Amanda Sims of Food52, who swears by this trick, says she simmers the vinegar in the morning and turns off the burner before she leaves for work. When she gets home, the kitchen is completely free of any lingering food smells from the days and meals before.
Try it out this weekend by simmering the vinegar and then letting it sit unheated while you go about any other chores you have. Though the vinegar smell is strong at first, it will quickly dissipate, leaving you with a home that looks and smells clean when you’re done.
