This Meal Kit Service Wants to Feed Your Family for Just $5 a Serving

Tags:

Have you been thinking about subscribing to a delivery meal kit? They are certainly appealing with all of the ingredients and instructions arriving right at your door and making dinnertime a breeze. That said, many of them can seem a bit too expensive in comparison to simply picking up your own fresh food at the grocery store. According to a review of the top meal kit delivery options for 2019 from CNET, prices range from about $8 to $14 per serving for popular companies like Blue Apron and Plated. However, the review also lists one option that’s not only much cheaper, but also aims to make mealtime easier: Dinnerly.

At just $4.99 per serving for a Two-Person Box or a Family Box, Dinnerly promises meals that are both affordable and not overly complicated to put together. Each recipe includes no more than 6 ingredients, but claims it doesn’t sacrifice flavor to achieve that simplicity. Recipes currently listed on the website include savory options such as French Dip Burger & Fries, Pan-Fried Gnocchi, and One-Pot Chicken & Rice.

It seems like a pretty sweet deal, but you might be wondering how a company can afford to profit with such a low price tag on the meals. According to the website, the company cut down on cost with techniques like getting rid of excess packaging (which also helps reduce the amount of waste for your home) and using digital rather than print recipe guides. “We use the same quality ingredients as the other kits,” the company explains, “but take a much simpler approach.” Fewer ingredients also means less prep time and clean-up time afterward, too.

Dinnerly does have one competitor that’s worth looking into before you decide, though. EveryPlate meal kits regularly offer deliveries for $4.99 per serving, but at the time of this writing the company is running a discount for meals ranging from just $3.33 to $4.16 per serving. With equally tempting recipes like French Onion Chicken Breasts and Quick Arrabiata Pasta, the main difference between the two companies seems to be the emphasis on ease at Dinnerly. EveryPlate might include more than six ingredients and take more of your time to complete, but the company seems to have plenty of quicker options available as well. Plus, EveryPlate includes free shipping unlike Dinnerly’s $8.99 delivery fee. Whichever way you go, it’s worth taking a look at your weekly grocery budget to see whether investing in one of these meal kit deliveries is right for you. Either way, the most important thing is providing healthy, filling meals for your whole family.
