This winter, we can't get enough of this deliciously slimming hot cocoa. The secret ingredient? Coconut milk, which is a rich source of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), a healthy fat that stimulates the thyroid to produce more of a key fat-burning hormone (thyroxine). The payoff: Researchers at the University of Naples in Italy found that consuming a MCFA-enriched meal boosted subjects’ metabolism by 56 percent for up to 5 hours.
What’s more, coconut milk can keep you full and satisfied for up to 4 hours because the MCFAs in the sip trigger the release of hunger-suppressing hormones. In fact, one study found subjects given a MCFA-rich drink consumed 15 percent fewer calories at their next meal than those who didn’t get the fatty acids.
Here’s the tasty recipe:
1 Tbs. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup coconut milk, divided
1/4 cup chopped unsweetened chocolate
1/4 tsp. chai spice
2 Tbs. maple syrup
