Claire’s Makeup Recalled After Mom Finds Asbestos in Daughter’s Kit

Tags:

UPDATE (January 2, 2018) — Claire’s press office says their makeup is asbestos-free. In a statement to GoodHousekeeping.com, Claire’s said:

“The initial results of testing by an independent certified laboratory show that the cosmetics tested to date are asbestos free. Out of an abundance of caution, additional testing is underway. We have also confirmed that the talcum ingredient supply is from a certified asbestos free European vendor. We will continue to honor returns for any customers remaining uncomfortable.”

This isn’t the first time companies have taken issue with the results of asbestos testing conducted by the Scientific Analytical Institute (SAI). SAI also claimed to have found asbestos in makeup at the tween retailer Justice in July 2017. However, Justice hired a third-party to test their products for asbestos, and the results showed the makeup was asbestos-free. The SAI has yet to comment on these new test results.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE (December 28, 2017) — Parents and grandparents: Listen up! If makeup from Claire’s was on your kid’s or grandkid’s wish list, now might be a good time to inspect their new items. The accessories and jewelry retailer is recalling nine different makeup products after a mother discovered her daughter’s makeup set had tested positive for the potentially cancer-causing mineral asbestos.

Kristi Warner, who works at Deaton Law Firm in Providence, Rhode Island, was worried about the chemicals in the makeup her 6-year-old daughter Mackenzie was using, according to NBC affiliate WJAR So she sent off her daughter’s glitter makeup kit, which she purchased at the Providence Place mall, to a laboratory in North Carolina to have it tested — and got shocking results.

“I physically sank,” Warner told WJAR. “I ended up sitting on the ground, just trying to wrap my head around how something like that could end up in our home. In the work that we do, we’ve come across contaminated cosmetics, but you just assume that a children’s product would be safe.”

Worried that other young children were unknowingly at risk, Warner and her boss, John Deaton, bought 17 other Claire’s products in nine different states. Every single item tested positive for tremolite asbestos, confirmed Sean Fitzgerald, the scientist at the Scientific Analytical Institute who conducted the testing.

“The fact that the majority of the products came from the store shelves in the last two weeks means that there are other children being exposed,” Warner said. And with the season of gift-giving just wrapping up, the possibility that many other children are being exposed to asbestos is frightening.
