The candy you reach for reveals a lot about how your mind works, says Alan Hirsch, M.D., author of What Flavor is Your Personality? “Food preferences aren’t determined only by your tongue—they’re affected by your thoughts, feelings and outlook on life.” Just pick your preferred chocolate flavor and read on to gain insight into your personality.
You’re a thinker.
Fruit sugars activate the brain region that rules pensive thought. If these sweets are your pick, you tend to crave solitude and can start to feel irritable if you don’t get enough alone time, cautions Dr. Hirsch. So be sure to carve out the time you need to feel your best.
You’re so charming.
Peanuts kick-start the ventral striatum—a cluster of brain nerves that helps people enjoy social contact. If you crave this flavor, your peppy personality makes you a people magnet. But you become restless if you’re alone too much. Stuck solo? Gaze at photos of friends to fire up the ventral striatum, mimicking the joy you experience from face-to-face contact.
You’re a quick wit.
The fatty acids in this nut speed the conversion of food into energy, revving brain function. If you desire that boost, you have a keen sense of humor paired with a sharp mind. But your wit attracts all kinds, so you often find yourself chatting with people who don’t appeal to you. To feel your best, give yourself permission to seek out only those who you feel particularly drawn to.
You’re a perfectionist.
Eating this gooey candy takes time. If it’s your favorite, you’re conscientious and hardworking, but your high standards can keep you from feeling accomplished. The fix? Celebrate small successes by treating yourself to a DVD or other indulgence. “This will help you appreciate how hard you work,” encourages Dr. Hirsch, “instead of always looking ahead for what needs to be done next.”
You love a challenge.
If you enjoy the brain boost of coffee-laced sweets, you throw yourself into new tasks, says Dr. Hirsch. But because your mind can get scattered, you don’t always finish them. The good news: Sipping four glasses of water a day can hone your focus fast.
You’re super organized.
Chewing nuts stimulates the production of brain waves called beta waves that help you stay alert and focused. If you love nutty candies, you enjoy tackling large projects, working out the tiniest details and being in charge since that’s how you can be sure everything is running smoothly. The snag? You can be hesitant to let go—and feel extra stress because of it. So make sure to stop and give yourself a quick perspective check when you feel yourself overinvesting.
