It's not often that a college student's experiment goes viral on Facebook--or any science experiment for that matter. But Vicky Greene, a bioscience major who's in her first year of school, has touched a nerve. The microbiologist-in-training decided to do an experiment with breast milk and bacteria to show just how good breastfeeding can be for babies.
She put several different kinds of bacteria in a petri dish, including the one that causes staph infection. Then she soaked discs in breast milk and put them in the middle of the dish. Then she waited to see what happened.
Here was the result, in a post she finally had to make public since it was being shared so much. The white spots are the breast milk and the clear areas around the white spots are where the milk proteins have killed off the bacteria. And those yellow, glitter-like areas? That's the bacteria.
Pretty amazing, right? Not too often you see the power of what comes out of your body in such an easy-to-see form.
