It's every pet-owning family's nightmare. You're on vacation and your dog goes AWOL. Now up the ante on that scenario by adding an ocean, and you can imagine the despair of a vacationing family when they discovered that their beloved spaniel, Chesney, had disappeared from a ferry bound toward Cape Cod from Martha's Vineyard.

It turned out that Chesney had fallen overboard, leash and all, into the Nantucket Sound. Around 11 AM another ferry's captain--headed in the opposite direction--spotted the panicked pooch as she struggled in the chilly water. The captain changed course and called the crew to man emergency positions. Passengers rushed to the deck to see what they could do. But the ferry was too big and too high for anyone to pull the pup from the water.
Fortunately for Chesney, a smaller fishing boat was nearby. The ferry signaled to the boat while the ferry passengers shouted to get its attention. One of the passengers later told the Vineyard Gazette that the whole drama was "very nerve wracking. You could see the dog almost knew to come toward us."
The rescue was a success! The people onboard the smaller boat scooped the spaniel up with a net.

The boat sailed back to Martha's Vineyard, where officials located Chesney's family. When the spaniel was finally reunited with her family, the dad, who'd been holding onto to Chesney at the time, was forgiven by the rest of the clan. Here is a photo of the pup, looking bedraggled, before she was reunited with her fam.

No one on board either boat thought twice about trying to save the spaniel. “That’s what we’d do for any person, any dog,” the captain of the ferry told the Vineyard Gazette.
