Laundry is referred to as a “chore” for a reason. By the time we’ve sorted the dirty clothes to go in the wash, lugged them to the machine (or worse —the laundromat), hefted them into the washer, then the dryer, folded them, and put them away, we’re pooped, to say the least! But the process of cleaning your clothes doesn’t have to be an energy sucker. With the best laundry hamper on hand, you’ll quickly find that the task becomes far easier — and (gasp!) — dare we even say, enjoyable?

Types of Laundry Hampers

Depending on the type of laundry hamper you choose to buy, these little storage Godsends will do everything from sort your soiled linens ahead of the wash, with divided bins for your darks, lights, or delicates, to help you transport your laundry to the machine via rolling wheels or convenient handles.

Some designs, like tilt out hampers or hamper cabinets, will even blend in with your décor, doubling as shelving space for your bed, bath, or laundry room.

Essentially, you’ll want a hamper that will fit your space, allow for the volume of laundry you need, and include any necessary features you might desire. You’ll also want to take its material into account. Read up on the pros and cons of the most common hamper materials below.

Plastic: Plastic hampers will be a breeze to wipe down and will hold up better than most. As far as aesthetics go, however, they may be less than desirable.

Cloth: The most versatile of the hamper materials, cotton is lightweight enough to be mobile, easy-to-clean, and breathable. It can occasionally fall short in the sturdy department, however, depending on how heavy your laundry loads are.

Wicker: Wicker laundry baskets are plenty chic, concealing your laundry away in style, but they’re not always so easy to clean.

Wood: Wood hampers or cabinets will blend in like a piece of furniture, making onlookers none the wiser that they’re actually housing soiled linens. They’re not ideal for wet laundry, however, as it can warp the material, and they can’t be easily moved.
