Our thoughts and prayers are with actor Antonio Banderas after the 56-year-old admitted he had suffered a heart attack. So scary!
According to the Associated Press, The Mask of Zorro star had a heart attack on Jan. 26 at his home in the U.K. Banderas was taken to the hospital after experiencing "agonizing" chest pains, but he is quoted as saying his health scare "wasn’t serious and hasn’t caused any damage." However, he later revealed he had three stents placed in his arteries at a clinic in Switzerland. If you ask us, that sounds pretty serious!
The stents are intended to keep his arteries open for blood flow. Over time, fatty deposits can buildup inside the arteries and block blood from flowing. That reduction in blood flow can cause chest pains, and, if left untreated, plaque can buildup and eventually block all blood to the heart, causing a heart attack.
To calm his fans, Banderas said, “It hasn’t been as dramatic as some have written,” while receiving a lifetime achievement award at a film festival in Malaga, Spain, his childhood home.
This is the first recent instance that Banderas' health has made headlines. In fact, he's worked steadily, without health-related interruptions, since the early 1980's. He even has a new film, called Security, which is scheduled to be released later this year.
Banderas is best-known to English speaking audiences for his work in films like Spy Kids and Puss in Boots. He has been married twice, first to Ana Leza and then to actress Melanie Griffith, whom he met on the set of Two Much. Griffith and Banderas were married from 1996 to 2015, and they have one child together, a daughter named Stella who was born in 1996. He is currently dating Nicole Kimpel, a 36-year-old Dutch investment consultant.
It sounds like the actor is on his way to recovery, but we'll continue to keep him in our thoughts and prayers! Get well soon!
