You don't think of governors of a state as being a badly paid job. And it isn't--the average salary is in the six figures (or about $125,000). But that's not the case in Maine. There Paul LePage, the current governor, is only pulling in $70,000 a year.
And that may explain why his wife, Ann, decided to tackle a second job this summer so she could save up for her dream car, a Toyota RAV4. Besides her official duties, Maine's first lady is waiting tables at a restaurant in Boothbay Harbor, called McSeagulls. And because the restaurant is in a very touristy part of the state, Ann LePage stands to make (with tips) about $28 an hour.

Not that she doesn't earn every penny. She works double shifts and pitches in no matter how small or dirty the job. At first, customers didn't recognize her--and the restaurant kept mum. But when people found who their server was, they cheered. Said one customer, ""It's the best of Maine, the best of who we are. Two feet on the ground."
