Amazon Scam Email Is Convincing Customers to Give Out Their Bank Account Information

Have you received any strange emails lately? A fake email chain supposedly sent by Amazon is making the rounds on the internet. The scam message is scarily convincing and features the Amazon logo with a subject line that reads: “We could not confirm the address associated with your Amazon account.”

The email itself is a short message explaining that Amazon could not confirm your address or other personal information associated with your Amazon account. It states that you must resubmit your information again to access your Amazon account with a link that reads, “Verify Account Information now.” When clicked, the link leads to a third-party website that could potentially infect your computer with malware.

Whatever you do, don’t click the link. The message is fake (and, let’s face it, was probably created by some creepy dude in a basement who wants to steal your information). Action Fraud, the National Fraud and Cyber Crime Reporting Center, and the Better Business Bureau are advising people to log in to Amazon directly, rather than risking their safety by engaging with potentially dangerous emails.

How to Avoid Email Phishing Scams

1. If there’s a link available, don’t click on it. Clicking on links in unsolicited emails can download malware onto your computer, or even worse, lead to identity theft. Even if the email looks official, the best place for it is in your digital trash can.

2. Never share any personal information. If someone contacts you via an unsolicited email, do not respond. Personal information includes credit card or banking information, your birth date, home address, and your social security number.

3. Check the Better Business Bureau for tips. Many email scams are similar in design and technique. If you’re ever unsure about an email, visit BBB.org for tips on discerning a legitimate email from a scam email. In addition, you can report a scam email to Amazon by following the instructions on Amazon’s help page.
