When Alfred Birch had congestive heart failure, his family was afraid they might lose him.
After all, the sick grandfather was 97 years old and needed to be hospitalized for his serious health issues. And Birch is such an important man to his family members.
"He has lived with me and my parents since my grandmother passed, around 15 years ago, so losing him is the biggest fear I have," said his granddaughter, Julia Geswell.
Though he survived, Birch was still in low spirits. So Geswell decided to do something fun to cheer him up. She and her mother decided to put his photo on Facebook to see if they could get 98 likes before his 98th birthday, which is March 28.
"We kind of did it to give him something to look forward to, put a smile on his face and get him out of that dreary hospital feel," Geswell said.
Imagine his joy when he found out the post has gotten more than 28,000 likes and has been shared more than 31,000 times--well before his birthday. Even better, he's back at home now, so he gets to enjoy the well wishes in comfort.
"It's really boosted his spirits," Geswell said. "He told me to go to the senior center to tell them they have a celebrity in Manchester now!"
