A lot of mothers tend to dote on their children, but Kelly Dirkes has always been told she overdoes it. Her friends and random people have accused the mother of coddling her kids and preventing them from one day being independent. The comments usually don't bother her enough to say anything, but that's all changed.
While shopping at Target with her baby, a stranger came up to Dirkes and said the same repeated phrase she's heard time and time again, "You spoil that baby." This time however, she wasn't going to stay mum on the issue. Instead, she went on Facebook to explain the special reason behind her pampering.
Her child had been adopted after spending 10 months alone in a sterile metal crib. The baby girl dealt with anxiety, frequently banging her head on her crib rails, and rocking herself for comfort. She had to adjust to being touched, held, and cherished by people who love her, and because of that, Dirkes understands the importance of making sure her daughter knows she's cared for.
"'Spoiling that baby' is the most important job I will ever have, and it is a privilege," wrote Dirkes. "I will carry her for a little while longer--or as long as she'll let me--because she is learning that she is safe. That she belongs. That she is loved."
Well said Kelly, we couldn't agree with you more!
